Aims / objectives

  • Have an understanding of pharmacology, principles of drug actions & therapeutic objectives
  • Understand principles of dosage, administration, pharmacokinetics and clearance and how this applies to patients (i.e. renal impairment, liver disease).
  • Gain an appreciation of monitoring parameters of drug therapy and narrow therapeutic index (Warfarin, Lithium, Anti-Epileptics)
  • Have an understanding of where to find the evidence behind stopping or starting medication in the elderly and how to apply this in practice
  • Monitoring & management of side-effects of drugs and national guidance on the yellow card reporting scheme.
