This workshop is deal for practitioners who have previously attended an introductory ear care and irrigation course. The programme focuses on theoretical and practical considerations thereby promoting continuing competence in this area of practice.

Note: This course is delivered in 2 half-day sessions. Both sessions are delivered on the same day to two different groups.

Aims / objectives

  • Review basic ear anatomy and physiology.
  • Differentiate between normal and abnormal ear presentations
  • Demonstrate safe and competent use of basic aural care instruments for aural toilet, the removal of wax and ear irrigation
  • Discuss contraindications, risks and complications of the above procedures.
  • Practice documentation of findings.
  • Be aware of current legal and professional accountability issues.

  • Ear anatomy and physiology
  • Patient assessment, history and ear examination
  • The normal tympanic membrane and common ear problems
  • Aural toilet and wax removal
  • Indications and contraindications to ear irrigation
  • Potential complications and their management
  • Locally used equipment, proper use, safe disposal and cleaning
  • Patient advice and after care
  • Documentation
  • Legal issues and professional accountability
