Course summary

This course will give HCAs in primary and secondary care a basic understanding of diabetes and will enable you to confidently manage patients who have diabetes.  It  accommodates all levels of HCA knowledge and skills.

Aims / objectives

  • Discuss current guidelines relating to the management and monitoring of diabetic patients.
  • Understand the classification and diagnosis of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
  • Be aware of the causes, symptoms and progressions of diabetes.
  • Apply the principles of monitoring and managing patients with diabetes to your clinical practice and annual review.
  • Use the 'empowerment approach' to work in partnership with these patients, their carers and families.

  • The psychological impact of diabetes
  • Monitoring:
  • - Obesity -weight, BMI, waist circumference ratio
  • - Physical exercise and nutrition
  • - QOF indicators - blood results, eyes, BP & blood glucose control
  • - Foot examination - recognizing signs of vascular disease and neuropathic conditions
  • Management and the HCA's role:
  • - The effects and management of inter current illness and hyperglycaemia
  • - Diabetes medications and their side effects
  • - Treatment and management of hypoglycaemia
  • - Diabetic foot care
  • - Patient education programs - lifestyle advice and smoking cessation
