This two day course will give you the basic principles for the safe use and supply of medicines in a frontline clinic.

Aims / objectives
- Discuss the basic principles of pharmacology and apply them to a variety of commonly used drugs.
- Explore factors that affect how medications work.
- Review drug usage for a number of common conditions.
- Be aware of possible drug reactions, contraindications and other unwanted effects.
Course programme
Basic principles for the safe use and supply of medicines including:
- Factors affecting how medicines work - age, race, other medicines, co-morbidities
- Adverse drug reactions - how they occur, what to do about them
- Using patient group directions and other mechanisms of supply
- Finding out about medicines - knowing what you don't know
Drugs and their uses including:
- Actions and uses
- Cautions and contraindications
- Unwanted effects
Medicines for gastrointestinal disease:
- Dyspepsia
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
Medicines for infections:
- Common infections - including sore throat, acute bronchitis, skin infections, conjunctivitis, coughs and colds, cold sores
- Understanding bacterial resistance and how to tackle it
Analgesics:
- Musculoskeletal pain
- Headache
- Fever
Medicines for allergies/skin conditions:
- Hayfever
- Skin allergies
- Dry skin
