AR28 Managing pain and bugs with drugs
Course summary
This one-day course will provide an important update on pharmacological management of pain and the treatment of common infections. It is aimed at nurses working in first contact or primary care.
(NB this course will not cover the use of analgesics in palliative care).

This course will be divided in to two interactive sessions which will include:
Managing pain
- Treatment options for common causes of acute and chronic pain
- Stepping up the analgesic ladder
- What's new with NSAIDs?
- NICE guidelines for osteoarthritis
- Using opiates in non-malignant pain - which and when?
- Treating neuropathic pain
Bugs and drugs
- Tackling bacterial resistance
- Managing common infections including sore throat, acute otitis media, impetigo, coughs and colds, conjunctivitis
- Is an antibacterial needed? Which one and how long for?
- Using prescribing data to guide practice
- Developments in bacterial resistance - MRSA, ESBLs.
