P60 Paediatric Minor Injuries Plastering & Splinting Basics
Course summary
This course promotes efficient management of paediatric minor injuries by teaching safe application of plaster casts and various splints to children who have simple fractures.

- Registered nurses, Emergency Care Practitioners and other registered Allied Health Professionals working A&E, Urgent Care Centers, Walk-in-centres & Minor Injury Units
- HCAs working in A&E, walk-in centres & minor injury units.
Aims / objectives
- Identify various types of fractures, including paediatric considerations.
- Be aware of principles of bone development in children and fracture healing.
- Understand indications for application of plaster casts or other splinting/immobilisation.
- Be aware of complications of plaster application.
- Practice applying various back slabs.
- Review evidence-based aftercare

- Basic MSK anatomy review including brief overview of pediatric bone development.
- Types of fractures, including common mechanism of injuries and principles of fracture healing.
- Potential complications of plaster immobilization.
- Back slab application for fractures of the hand, wrist, elbow, and ankle.
- Hands-on practice.
- Patient discharge and follow-up management.
