Aims / objectives
- Develop a systematic approach to 12 lead ECG interpretation and cardiac rhythm recognition
- Understand criteria for a normal ECG (including normal variants in adults)
- Be aware of the most common 12 lead ECG abnormalities
- Recognise abnormal ECG findings and their clinical significance
- Increase your recognition of a wide range of cardiac arrhythmias
- Be able to differentiate between cardiac arrhythmias in complex situations
- Understand the pathophysiology of cardiac arrhythmias
- Become a more confident patient manager
Course programme
- Approaches to ECG interpretation and cardiac axis
- Common ECG abnormalities including:
- Interventricular conduction disturbances: bundle branch block, fascicular block and pre-excitation
- Ventricular hypertrophy
- Electrolyte disturbance
- Pulmonary embolism
- Patterns of infarct, injury and ischaemia.
- Common tachy and brady arrhythmias, including:
- Atrial fibrillation
- Atrial flutter
- AV nodal re-entrant tachycardia
- Ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation
- Heart blocks
- Escape rhythms
- Paced rhythm
