Aims / objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • Apply age-appropriate history-taking techniques for paediatric minor injuries to ensure safe practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of paediatric musculoskeletal anatomy and its relevance to physical assessment techniques for minor injuries.
  • Discuss and apply appropriate management strategies, including analgesia and supportive therapy, for common traumatic presentations in paediatric minor injuries.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in examining and managing various types of minor wounds, including closure techniques and patient education.
  • Practice common basic minor clinical procedures suitable for paediatric patients.

Course programme

  • Essentials of paediatric minor injury history-taking including Gillick/Fraser competency, assessment, and evidence-based management
  • Basic assessment of the neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. To cover:
    • Targeted history taking
    • Paediatric musculoskeletal anatomy
    • Joint function assessment
    • Essential physical examination techniques/practice
    • Common injuries and conditions: Signs and symptoms, differential diagnoses, management and referral strategies
    • Case Scenarios
  • As above for lower limb minor Injuries: the hip, knee, ankle and foot
  • Minor head and facial injuries in children.
  • Local Analgesia Techniques for Paediatrics
    • Types and safe levels 
    • Local infiltration techniques
    • Digital nerve block demonstration and practice
  • Discuss principles of digital fracture and dislocation reduction in the older child.
  • Paediatric nail Injuries management
    • Subungual hematoma management and trephining
    • Avulsed nail care strategies
  • Discuss foreign body removal methods in children from the ear, eye, nose, skin, and subungual areas
  • Management of 
    • Paronychia 
  • Assessment and management of minor burns in children
    • Identification of burn severity and when to refer for specialized care
  • Acute Wound Closure Techniques
    • Basic principles and techniques for wound closure in paediatrics
    • Demonstration and practice of interrupted sutures, staples, tissue adhesive, hair opposition technique and steristrips
